Biography
Prof. Andrew I. Chukwuemerie, SAN, FCIArb (UK), FICIArb got his LL.B from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, his LL.M from the University of Lagos, Nigeria where he is now also pursuing his Ph.D just for the love of it. He has been a Professor of Commercial Law (with emphasis on Arbitration) since 2005.

He has been appointed as Sole Arbitrator, Chairman of Panel and as Co-arbitrator in a number of domestic and international commercial and investment arbitrations and Conciliation. He has also served as counsel, a trainer in arbitration as well as a teacher of Arbitration to both undergraduate and graduate students in the University system since 1998 when he joined teaching. He is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London (FCIArb) and the Institute of Construction Industry Arbitrators, Nigeria (FICIArb) and a Mediator and Arbitrator of the World Property Organisation, Switzerland, a member of the International Chambers of Commerce (ICC), the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), Lagos Court of Arbitration, the LCIA MIAC Arbitration Centre, Mauritius, the Lagos Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration as well as a member of the Abuja, Enugu of Enugu State, Port Harcourt of Rivers State and Umuahia of the Abia State Multidoor Court Houses in Nigeria.

He has conducted arbitrations in complex Oil and Gas matters, Maritime, Telecommunications, Construction, Hospitality and Tourism as well as in investment Arbitrations. He has conducted Conciliations, Mediations and Negotiations. He has advised parties as well as foreign counsel on Nigerian Law on Oil and Gas etc. He has been counsel to parties in several complex arbitration and ADR matters of domestic and international character, and in litigation matters connected with arbitration. In 1996, his critique of the confusion that the Court encountered in applying both ss. 4 and 5 of the Arbitration Act, cap A18, LFN 2004 resulted in his first article in a learned journal, “Stay of Court Proceedings Pending Arbitration in Nigerian Law” 13 Journal of International Arbitration 3 (1996), 119 – 142 (Switzerland) which opened the way for his interest in arbitration. He has since authored 5 books one of which is on arbitration and the other partly on arbitration; 15 book chapters, 6 of which are on arbitration; 46 journal articles out of which 22 are on arbitration as well as 59 seminar papers 22 of which are on arbitration. He became an Associate, a Member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK through promotions based on experienced arbitrators route without any examination. He has been a trainer in workshops and seminars. He is the Principal Partner and Head of the Arbitration and ADR practice of the firm, Okibe Lawhouse since 2000 and Research Director, Centre for Arbitration Studies, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
