Biography
Funke is currently an independent arbitrator, having retired from AELEX, a Nigeria and Ghana based law firm where she headed the Disputes Resolution practice until her retirement.
With 45 years’ experience in commercial litigation and corporate dispute resolution, she regularly sits as an arbitrator in institutional and ad hoc arbitration proceedings - both internationally and domestically. She presently focuses on disputes resulting from foreign investments into Africa, most usually in the construction, natural resources and energy sectors. She has also been appointed in investment treaty disputes and was until recently a member of the Chairman's Panel of arbitrators at ICSID, in which capacity she has projected Nigeria as a country where competent arbitrators are available by being appointed as arbitrator in 4 ICSID cases in the last 3 years.
She is. a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Arbitration, a member of the Court of Arbitration for MARC , the Alternative Dispute Resolution arm of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) as well as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. She is a member of the International Arbitration Rules Advisory Board of the African Foundation of Southern Africa and has recently been appointed as an Expert member of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme Peoples Court of China.
She holds an LLM from Harvard Law School and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2001.
