Organisation Profile
Our International Arbitration practice is preeminent in the field. We have spent over half a century successfully handling arbitrations and related matters around the world in all major industries. Many of our cases are high-profile and include some of the most important decisions in international arbitration history.

We have been advising clients on the African continent for over 40 years, experience that makes us one of the leading legal practices in Africa. We are familiar with the risks, uncertainties and commercial drivers associated with work in Africa and have advised on many of the largest and most complex disputes in the region across 50 African countries. This experience has grown significantly over the years and includes advising on some of the largest and most complex disputes arising out of projects and transactions, including acting for global corporations, investors, sovereign states, multilateral agencies and financial institutions. By combining our extensive global network of 44 offices in 30 countries with our strong presence in Johannesburg and Cairo, we provide a unique service offering to both domestic and international clients in commercial and investor-state matters. We have also built a network of counsel in the region with whom we work on a regular basis.

Our team is differentiated by the fact that we act in arbitrations extending across a wide range of sectors, with the common denominators being the magnitude, complexity and significance of the representations.

In Africa, we have developed particular expertise in international arbitration relating to:

• Energy (oil & gas, power, renewables and nuclear)
• Construction & infrastructure
• Commercial developments
• Telecommunications
• Financial services
• Matters involving States and State entities

In addition to having some of the world’s leading arbitration practitioners working in these key sectors, our integrated structure means that we regularly collaborate with our lawyers who are skilled in other areas of dispute resolution such as commercial litigation, anti-trust, investor state arbitrations, white collar crime, intellectual property and environmental law, as well as our industry professionals.
